William Morris was a great designer and prolific writer. He was offered the title of Poet Laureate but refused it, leaving the post open to Tennyson. Originally intended as a picture book with Morris borders and wood-cuts by Burne-Jones, it tells of a king who gives up his kingdom for the love of a commoner and was described at the time as a "fantastic little book, chiefly lyrical". Beth Russell's attractive needlework sampler is adapted from the front cover. The canvas is printed with the interwoven stems and a chart is supplied for the lettering.
